Water
In sub-Saharan Africa, the main impacts of climate change will be on our water systems. The resulting water scarcity will hit poor communities, farmers and vulnerable ecosystems the hardest. Access to reliable clean safe water is essential in the context of climate change for human health and food production.
Engagement with Government Departments
We engage with the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) on water policy issues, and its responsibility in relation to community water resources.
We advocate for awareness on the impact of Timber plantations on downstream river flow, pollution and access to water resources through Catchment Management Authorities and the Department of Environment Forestry.
National Water Solidarity
Working across the country we assist with facilitating a platform and building networks for water activists, traditional health practitioners, women and youth to raise their grievances on issues affecting them around water access and water resource quality. We also work closely with other NGO’s working in the sector to consolidate and scale our work collectively.
Provincial Government and Municipalities
Water activists in the EC are engaging with smallholder farmers and pursuing legal avenues provincially in collaboration with other national water movements.
Catchment Management forums
In Mpumalanga EMG works closely with the Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Authority (IUCMA) and the Bushbuckridge municipality on issues of potable water, river health and river cleaning. We work to revive defunct Water Catchment Management Forums like the Kuils River CMF and support community voices in CMF’s that have been coopted by big business.
Community Lead Organisations
EMG works closely with water activists in Cape Town, campaigning against high water bills and the installation of smart meters. We engage the City on water provision issues, conduct awareness drives, facilitate workshops in communities and support citizen science/participatory action research work to amplify community voices.
Community Action
We organise activities and support other organisations activities that address critical environmental issues. This includes campaigns such as Adopt a Wetland, Adopt a river and other cleanup initiatives with schools and partner networks alike.
