About

EMG has been working on environmental and social justice issues since our inception in 1991. As South Africa was moving towards democracy EMG was established to support the collective development of environmentally and socially just laws for post-Apartheid South Africa.

Our work of over 30 years has built solid practice in the areas of Action Research, Education and Training, Advocacy and Networking and Community development. We have built lasting relationships with many different members of communities and organisations across the country and internationally.

Over the years, the activities we undertake have changed to address the needs and challenges of the communities we work with.

Our focus is on Environmental Justice relating to water and food in the context of climate change and environmental racism. We work with local, marginalised communities on the challenges they face in relation to environmental degradation, access to water and food security; which are increasing as the planet’s temperature rises, ecosystems are destroyed and access to natural resources are increasingly limited.

An independent Board of Trustees governs EMG and makes final decisions on finance, policy, and overall direction of the organisation – our current Trustees (in order of equal importance) are:

Zainab Adams (Chair and Finance Sub-Committee)
Jessica Lavelle (Finance Sub-Committee)
Kearabetswe Moopelo (HR Sub-committee)
Mandla Gqamlana (Member)
Jonathan Julius (Member)
Siviwe Mdoda (Member)
Mandy Moussouris (Ex-officio member)

THABO LUSITHI – Head Programmes
MANDY MOUSSOURIS – Director
ANNE PLAATJIES – HANASE – Project Manager Agroecology
DECEMBER NDHLOVU – Project Manager Mpumalanga
LIEZEL HAYDRICKS – Administrator

EMG believes that working to save the environment will ensure a better life for future generations. But that work does not end with us, it is critical to address challenges like youth unemployment and build a new generation of Environmental Justice Activists. As part of our work EMG has a national internship programme for young unemployed graduates and community activists.

Our 2024 Interns are:
Muziwenhlanhla Biyela
Drea Boesak
Lilo Mxaka
