A meeting in June 2000 in Copenhagen , The Rio + 8 NGO Round Table, brought together delegates from organisations in 50 different countries. Of the 70 delegates , 40 were from the developing world. One of the issues identified was the general lack of engagement of Southern Civil Society organisations in global negotiations such as the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). The meeting mandated 3 representatives of the Danish 92 Group, namely, Mellmfolkelight Samvrike (MS) WWF-Denmark and Ibis, all with a significant spread of field offices around the world, to manage a global programme that aimed at assisting Southern NGOs in preparing themselves for the WSSD. The project was designed to operate in 30 countries in Africa, Latin America, and South East Asia. Project partners (NGOs and networks) in these countries and regions have been appointed to serve as regional, sub-regional or country focal points. The project is structured such that each sub-regional focal point is linked to a number of country focal points. The sub-regional and regional focal points are networked to each other and to the global project management team in Copenhagen, Denmark In the SADC region country focal points for the Project are Abiodes, (Mozambique), Desert Research Foundation of Namibia, ZERO (Zimbabwe) and EJNF (South Africa). EMG functions as the Southern African sub-regional focal point. |
