Resources - waste

This is no longer a significant focus area of EMG. However, a few publications are still available and may still be appropriate.

Although it is highly technical and much of the data is no longer current, our publication Clean Production - A preliminary assessment of the need and potential for the introduction of clean technology in some industrial sectors in South Africa (1993) EMG gives a good overview of the potential for cleaner production technologies in South African industry .

One of the conclusions of the above report is the identification of the mining and textile sectors as producting the greatest amount of hazardous waste per contribution to GDP. This led to EMG commissioning two further and more detailed studies in each of these sectors, namely, Waste generation potential of the South African Mineral industry (1996), Stewart M. & Petrie J., EMG; and
Water and effluent management in the South African textile industry (1997), C. Gillfillan, M.Sc. Dissertation, Univ Natal.
