The UN Convention to Combat Desertification
South Africa's National Action Programme

South Africa signed the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in 1998. In terms of the Convention's requirements, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEA&T), in consultation with other government departments and various institutions, developed a draft National Action Programme (NAP) to combating land degradation to alleviate rural poverty.

The objective of the NAP is to establish sustainable land management practices throughout South Africa through the implementation of appropriate policy. Central to this is a coherent system for diagnosing and responding to land degradation at national, provincial and local levels. Another key feature of the NAP is the proposal to establish partnerships between government departments, foreign donors, the private sector, NGOs and landowners.

Nairobi-based Environmental Liaison Centre International has produced a useful document for anyone wanting to understand the basics of the UNCCD, entitled UNCCD for Beginners.
