Networks

EMG could not accomplish half of what is does, if it were not for the support and partnership of other organisations. Participating in, and supporting networks (national, regional and international) is thus an essential part of our work. This part of the website provides information on these networks. For more information on any of these networks, please contact info@emg.org.za

AFIT
EMG is not strictly a member of the Association for Fairness in Trade, but acts as its secretariat. This includes organising training, raising and managing funds, research, logistics, etc. The network represents small-farmers and farm-workers in the fair trade system and was formally launched in May 2005 to provide a platform for better engagement of fair trade beneficiaries in the system that is supposed to serve them. DryNet
This a network of 17 NGOs with operations in 21 countries, including 3 in Europe.
Drynet
aims to increase the profile the Desertification Convention internationally as well as within individual countries and to engage in joint lobbying and advocacy.

Sustainabilty Watch
EMG is a partner in Sustainability Watch, with NGO members in 15 Southern countries and withthe aim of monitoring government's post-WSSD programmes and the Millenium Development Goals.

International Rivers
Sharing information on river, dams and water issues globally is the mandate of the International Rivers. More recently with their assistance, EMG has played a key role in helping to establish the African Rivers Network.

Nawisa
Given the cross-boundry nature of water resources in South Africa, networking at a regional level is important too. EMG played a key role in the establishment of Network for Advocacy of Water Issues in Southern Africa (Nawisa), a regional network.

Trade Strategy Group
Organisations interested in tracking and lobbying on issues of global trade and the WTO make up the membership of the Trade Strategy Group . The group meets irregularly and communicates through an email list.

African Rivers Network (ARN)
The ARN is a network of dam-affected communities, NGOs and other allies working towards ecological sustainability and social justice in the arena of large dams and their alternatives. ARN fulfils its mission through working together, influencing decision-making, amplifying community voices and rights, and capacitating African countries.

EMG played a key role in helping to establish this network and acted as its first "secretariat". This role has now passed to the National Association of Professional Environmentalists (NAPE) based in Uganda.

SA Civil Society Water Caucus
EMG is an active member of the Water Caucus. This group was very active in the lead-up to the WSD and has remained an important forum for CSO discussion and campaigns on water and related issues. At a local level we are active in the Western Cape Water Caucus which brings together a wide range of NGOs and CBOs working on water issues in the city of Cape Town and surrounds. The WC Water Caucus provides the space for learning, building solidarity and jiont advocacy and lobbying. EMG has raised funds to allow a co-ordinated programme over 5 years, of action research, reflection, and technical research to be determined by the Caucus members.

Fair Trade South Africa (FTSA)
EMG is a member of FTSA, the umbrella organisation for all SA fair trade stakeholders. Since its inception in 2005, it has struggled to raise sufficient funds to establish a functioning and staffed office. Funding has finally been secured, and while the bureaucratic procedures are being completed, EMG has agreed to act as an interim manager of funds.
